Taxco
Gold and silver from local mines built Taxco before the 1519 Conquest. A Frenchman, Jose de la Borda, revived the industry in the 1700s, and William Spratling, a New Orleans artist, rejuvenated it in the 1920s with modern designs. The opulent Santa Prisca Church, financed by Borda, is not to be missed, along with a walk around the plaza, center of activity, and downhill behind the church to the market. Posada de la Mision is a leading hotel with view, and at meal-times, balconies on the plaza become restaurants, including Paco’s which has been there, it seems, forever. Colonial hill town is a place to walk, in comfortable shoes. About 45 minutes from Cuernavaca.
